Everything we've see says Downes should start, but everything else we've seen tells us he won't.

Our press is too slow when Soucek is playing.
Downes is quicker all round, faster movement and quicker speed of thought. And his passing and ball retention is far better.
Fornals has to play in Paqueta's position, Downes in Soucek's. If Moyes fudges this, he's a knob.

Agree with that team too Mike but he will play Soucek we know that and Downes in a role he isn’t suited to as the advanced midfielder again :-(.
We can only hope that Paqueta coming back and a bit more time and Moyesiah will see that Downes should be partnering Rice, Paqueta deeper and Fornals or Benny in the hole / advanced midfield role. Cornet then takes the wide birth and Antonio an impact sub out wide.
That will just need the wing back roles to fix .
Btw, I am not confident he will ever drop Soucek. Moyes seems stuck in 10-20 year old thinking about a big lump in the midfield. He was after Onana an upgraded version of Soucek. What we need are fast players, who work relentlessly but have a deft touch with a football and great passing. More like Downes so we can keep the ball far more effectively.
Of course just an opinion and we ( some of us ) areI just humble fans who sits on their sofa farting during games ( it’s what you do at this age) but having watched and played footie for a few decades you see the way tge game has changed and what the successful teams are doing
Come on Moyes open your eyes and mind ! :-)

I know Mike. I salute your positivity / wishful thinking:-)
Soucek may as well be playing on one leg based on his passing and pace. He is actually a good squad man with a great attitude who always tries to give 100% but to progress we need a better technical player. We have outgrown him but Moyes doesn’t see it which is why some are questioning whether we have outgrown Moyes too. I’m trying to be a bit more patient. I’m hoping post WC, with hopefully a fit Aguerd and Paqueta, Moyes will be ready to ditch the old counter attacking only model and set us up to play out from the back thru midfield to beat the press etc. we shall see.

I agree, looking at the players that stayed at home, he could possibly be looking to try a form of 4-4-2 with benny & bowen out wide and the two strikers starting. It'd be a shock but it does match up with the players that have rested

Moyes might live a little and start both Scammaca and Antonio?
Think that is a partnership that could work and needs to be tested.

For those of you hoping that he'll start Mickey and Scammel together, meditate on this - according to Mickey on Match of the Day, they don't even play together in training. Always on opposite sides.
I have a sneaky feeling we're going to see Sownes start in place of Soucek on Sunday. Mind you, it could be wishful thinking. Hopefully the guys who have been left at home have been doing daily shooting practice.
